A Recipe For The Perfect San Antonio Weekend Getaway

The Stars at night are big and bright — clap clap clap –(sing along if you know the words) Most people in the United States can finish that song. Texas is a big state and people who live in Texas love to talk about their state. As I write this I am thinking about the Lone Star Texas flag. I am thinking about Big Tex at the state fair. I am thinking about deep fried oreos, 6th street, the Red River Shootout, cold beer, barbeque, country music, the River Walk and of course, the Alamo. There’s a city in Texas that feels like a really big town. It has historical sites, boutique hotels and an amazing food and beer scene. So if you’re visiting Texas, San Antonio is the perfect getaway.

Biking in San Antonio is the best way to get around the downtown area. If a bike ride in downtown San Antonio isn’t your thing then walking is a great alternative. Either way, staying in the heart of downtown San Antonio is the place to be.

There are a few iconic markers that visitors have to see. Additionally there are some hidden gems in San Antonio that don’t get talked about enough. So whether you are escaping the cold or just visiting to get away, we are sure you’ll find something fun to do while you are here.

First, go ahead and visit The Alamo and the Riverwalk. Walk out of your hotel and head over to the most iconic historical marker in San Antonio. You can hear about the Alamo by booking a tour or you could book a Haunted Ghost Tour of San Antonio. After you’re done with your history lesson you can take a stroll down on the river where you will find restaurants and bars, we will suggest a few in another blog.

If you’re not into biking or walking, another recommendation would be to book a ticket with Hop-on Hop-off San Antonio. Booking this ticket will give you a 24 hour pass to venture to all of the popular spots around the downtown area. One of those spots is the Pearl area. The Pearl, once a vacant brewery on 22 acres, is the most popular area for locals to visit. Don’t feel like you have to be a local to visit here because there is plenty for out-of-towners to do.

The Pearl can accommodate families with children as well as singles and couples. On the weekends there is a farmers market that stays open until 2:00pm. There is an open courtyard with a splash pad for kids. Within walking distance you’ll also find a brewery, a wine bar, coffee shops and restaurants. A recommendation is having that coffee, cold drink or eat at the Hotel Emma.

Depending on the time of year it might be time to get inside and cool off. Hopscotch San Antonio is an immersive art exhibit that not only has amazing interactive art, it also has air conditioning, a bar, and on most weekends food trucks and live music. Pro Tip: Book online at hopscotchsanantonio.com and use code: MURALRIDE for 20% off your tickets.

The San Antonio Museum of Art is also a great place to escape the heat. On Sundays they offer free admission. The museum is tucked away on the northern part of the San Antonio River and is walking distance to amazing outdoor bars and restaurants. Be sure to check out their website samuseum.org to see the active exhibits that are happening.

Now if you have access to a car, a must see local attraction is the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. During the months of October through November 2, 2021 you can see the Frida Khalo Oasis. Here you will be able to see a rendition of Caza Azul, the artist’s blue house that currently resides in Mexico City. In the courtyard you will be able to see art inspired by Frida Khalo. If you are reading this and it’s the holiday season, you’ll be able to see LIGHTSCAPE, a one-mile lighted walk through the botanical gardens.
